Black & White
In 2005 I received a Certificate in Art for the Children's Market from the University of Washington. I have been a member of the Society for Children's Book Writers and Illustrators since 2006. These pieces were done for workshops, private commissions, and as part of my portfolio.
The opening scene from the YA novel I'm working on. Watercolor, colored pencil, and a bit of chalk for good measure.
From The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. “Fodder-wing’s silence was intolerable. Now he understood. This was death. Death was a silence that gave back no answer. Fodder-wing would never speak again.” The original version was my entry for the 2013 Tomie dePaola prize. This is my fourth or fifth stab at it, mostly experimenting with finding the right mix of media. Watercolor and black colored pencil
From Watership Down by Richard Adams. "They hesitated among the thick heather, unable to see more than a few feet ahead." Black colored pencil
From Watership Down by Richard Adams. "Immediately Bigwig fell upon him, scratching and kicking." Black colored pencil
From Watership Down by Richard Adams. "It was no cat. The creature in the hollow was a bird -- a big bird, nearly a foot long." Black colored pencil
Frog and Mouse. This was a class assignment where I began playing with using a black colored pencil rather than graphite. I remember struggling with the mouse's grimace and the difficulty in making an amphibian look concerned.
